across the road from our house
not a beach quite
but where land meets water
the bright green chef’s chopping board
and fishermen’s discarded welly
are being claimed by
squint eyed crabs
and migratory birds

we call it the stinky beach
because the boats that moor there
drop their human waste
straight into the water
but it doesn’t stink so much just now

not so many humans here
this summer

and I think about how quickly
it all falls away
